KAUST Secures Japan Prize for its Advanced Marine Ecosystem Research

The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has secured the prestigious Japan Prize in recognition of its pivotal efforts to promote the understanding of changing marine ecosystems and leading research in blue carbon.

This remarkable milestone strengthens Saudi Arabia’s position as a prestigious scientific destination accelerating marine solutions in order to combat the impacts of climate change, Arab News reported.

Among the recipients of the Japan Prize is KAUST biological oceanography and marine ecology Professor Carlos Duarte. Interestingly, this international recognition was a result for his groundbreaking work in marine ecology.

Commenting on the event, KAUST board of trustees’ secretary-general Dr. Fahad bin Abdullah Toonsi expressed pride over the university’s achievement. In addition, he stressed KAUST’s role in fostering global understanding of marine ecosystems.

In the same context, Toonsi emphasized Saudi Arabia’s efforts in pioneering sustainable innovation and impactful contributions to climate-change solutions and marine conservation.

Therefore, such efforts mirror KAUST’s dedication to scientific innovation as part of the Saudi Vision 2030.

Known as the “Nobel Prize of Japan,” the Japan Prize is an annual award for scientists who introduce extraordinary innovations in science and technology.

Launched in 1985, the prize aims to honor scientific precedence seeking to promote peace and prosperity for humanity.
