KAU Opens Admissions, Empowering Saudi Women in Maritime Studies

In a historic move, King Abdulaziz University (KAU) in Jeddah has opened admissions for women in maritime studies. This decision aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which emphasizes women’s inclusion in various sectors, including maritime. For the first time, Saudi women can now pursue degrees in marine engineering, navigation, surveying, supply chain, and maritime transport.

Dr. Faisal Al-Dhibani, Dean of KAU’s College of Maritime Studies, highlighted the university’s commitment to internationally recognized education and training. “Our goal is to build qualified Saudi human resources in maritime transport and logistics,” Al-Dhibani said, emphasizing the impact on the national economy.

Bridging Workforce Gaps in the Maritime Sector

The College of Maritime Studies’ recent female admissions address workforce shortages in Saudi Arabia’s maritime industry. Maha Hegazy, Vice Dean for the female section, explained that admitting women into these fields will help close gaps and promote sustainability.

Al-Dhibani noted that Saudi women’s involvement in the maritime sector has grown significantly in recent years, reflecting the success of Vision 2030. This development not only strengthens the sector but also fosters an inclusive workforce for a sustainable future.

Saudi Arabia’s Broader Push for Women’s Rights

This move marks one of many recent initiatives empowering Saudi women. Since 2018, women have gained the right to drive, travel without male guardians’ approval, and apply for passports independently. Additionally, female ambassadors have increased in number, with six women now representing Saudi Arabia internationally.

Through efforts in education, diplomacy, and new job sectors, Saudi Arabia continues its journey toward empowering women, contributing to its Vision 2030 ambitions and a more inclusive society.
