US-Iran Peace Efforts Stumble as Trump Cancels Talks

Hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough in the US-Israeli conflict with Iran faded on Sunday as high-level negotiations stalled in Islamabad. Both Washington and Tehran maintained rigid positions despite international pressure to resolve a war that has paralyzed global energy markets.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi returned to the Middle East following mediation efforts in Pakistan over the weekend. Simultaneously, President Donald Trump canceled a scheduled visit to Islamabad by his envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, citing inadequate progress.

Although a fragile ceasefire paused full-scale fighting, the parties failed to agree on permanent terms to end the devastating war. The conflict continues to drive up oil prices and fuel global inflation while threatening the outlook for international economic growth.

Tehran maintains its closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which normally carries twenty percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas. In response, Washington continues its strict maritime blockade of Iranian ports, further strangling the regional economy and complicating any peace efforts.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian told Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif that Tehran would not enter “imposed negotiations” under such threats. He insisted that the United States must first remove the maritime blockade before negotiators could begin laying the groundwork for a settlement.

Trump Rejects Iranian Proposal

Speaking in Florida, Trump explained that he canceled the diplomatic mission due to the high cost of an “inadequate” Iranian offer. He noted that while Iran “offered a lot,” the proposal did not meet the necessary threshold for a formal American response.

Furthermore, Trump claimed on Truth Social that “tremendous infighting and confusion” plagued the current Iranian leadership. “Nobody knows who is in charge, including them,” he posted, adding, “Also, we have all the cards, they have none!”

While Araqchi described his recent Pakistani visit as “fruitful,” the war continues to destabilize the broader Middle East region. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently ordered troops to forcefully attack Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, further testing the US-mediated ceasefire.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt previously noted some progress, but the recent breakdown suggests a long road ahead for peace. Consequently, the world remains on edge as both nations wait for the other to make the first significant concession.
