Jubail Industrial City to Host 6th International Conference on Learning Cities

Jubail Industrial City, operated by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, is set to host the 6th International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC6) from December 3 to 5, 2024. This is under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The royal sponsorship highlights King Salman’s dedication to global cooperation for sustainable development and tackling global challenges.

6th International Conference on Learning Cities Emphasizes International Educational Cooperation

The decision to host 6th International Conference on Learning Cities (ICLC6) in Jubail Industrial City coincides with the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu’s 50th anniversary. Hosting ICLC6 highlights Jubail Industrial City’s pioneering role in using education for sustainable development. Moreover, the conference presents a crucial opportunity for exchanging expertise and ideas with cities worldwide. It also helps develop joint action plans to enhance learning cities’ role in addressing global challenges, especially climate change.

UNESCO’s Global Network of Learning Cities

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities, represented by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning in Hamburg, Germany, selected Jubail Industrial City to host the conference. This selection was based on the city’s demonstrated commitment and capacity to ensure the event’s success. This includes initiatives promoting lifelong learning and active participation since joining the network in 2020. Consequently, this led to receiving the UNESCO Global Learning City Award in 2021. This perfectly embodies the UNESCO network’s mission to advance sustainable development, entrepreneurship, and skill enhancement.

6th International Conference on Learning Cities Theme

The conference theme, “Learning Cities at the Forefront of Climate Action,” aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Green Initiative launched by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. It aligns with the Middle East Green Initiative and Human Capacity Development Program to boost Saudi citizens’ global competitiveness.

Representatives of UNESCO’s learning cities from around the world and relevant stakeholders are invited to discuss strategies for enhancing climate action through lifelong learning. This international conference provides a unique opportunity for city officials, education and learning enthusiasts, and representatives of the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities to convene. They aim to exchange challenges and solutions. Additionally, they will discuss best practices in promoting lifelong learning.

UNESCO’s Global Network and its Mission

The UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities encompasses 356 cities from 79 countries. It effectively mobilizes resources across sectors, promoting inclusive and quality learning from basic to higher education. It aims to activate learning in families and communities, and facilitate workplace learning. Moreover, it seeks to expand the use of modern learning technologies and enhance learning quality and excellence. By doing so, the member cities in the network foster individual empowerment, social integration, economic development, cultural prosperity, and sustainable development.
