Japanese drone innovator Terra Drone is expanding its collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil company, Aramco, to inspect oil and gas facilities using advanced unmanned technology. The partnership aims to replace traditional scaffolding inspections, which currently take weeks, with efficient drone surveys.
A memorandum of understanding signed in 2025 outlines test runs starting later this year, with full operations expected by 2027. If finalized, this deal would mark Terra Drone’s largest contract for energy infrastructure inspections.
Economic and Technological Impact
Terra Drone CEO Toru Tokushige projects billions of yen in sales over three to five years, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s push for technological adoption. The company’s Saudi subsidiary, established in 2023 with $14 million from Aramco’s Wa’ed Ventures, will spearhead local operations.
While focusing on energy, Terra Drone also develops drone traffic systems and agricultural solutions, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s broader economic diversification goals. The firm joined Tokyo’s Growth Market 250 Index in 2024 but remains pre-profit.
