Japan, US Stage Air Drill Following China-Russia Patrols

Japan and the United States conducted a joint air exercise on Wednesday in response to an “increasingly severe security environment surrounding our country,” according to the Japanese joint chiefs of staff. The exercise involved two US B52 bombers, three Japanese F-35 fighter jets, and three Japanese F-15s.

The joint exercise comes after Chinese and Russian warplanes conducted patrols near Japan, as Tokyo reported that two Russian Tu-95 nuclear-capable bombers flew from the Sea of Japan to meet two Chinese H-6 bombers in the East China Sea. They then conducted a joint flight around Japan, prompting Tokyo to scramble fighter jets in response.

Incidents and Accusations Escalate Tensions

The drill also follows a recent incident where Chinese military aircraft locked radar onto Japanese jets, with Japan scrambling its F-15 jets due to concerns about possible airspace violations. China’s foreign ministry spokesman, Guo Jiakun, accused Japan of intruding into Chinese training areas and conducting close-range reconnaissance.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent remarks about Japan potentially intervening militarily in the event of a Chinese attack on Taiwan have heightened tensions with Beijing. China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to assert its claims over the island.

The United States criticized China’s actions, stating that they are “not conducive to regional peace and stability.” NATO chief Mark Rutte also expressed concern over the radar incident and joint Chinese-Russian patrols, calling them “regrettable.”

Regional Security Concerns

South Korea reported that Russian and Chinese warplanes entered its air defense zone, leading to the deployment of fighter jets, with both China and Russia described their drills as routine exercises.

“We confirmed the strong resolve of Japan and the United States not to allow any unilateral change of the status quo by force, as well as the readiness of the Self-Defense Forces and the US military,” said the Japanese joint chiefs of staff.

The joint exercise underscores the strong alliance between the US and Japan, with a US State Department spokesperson stating, “The US-Japan Alliance is stronger and more united than ever. Our commitment to our ally Japan is unwavering, and we are in close contact on this and other issues.”
