The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) is participating in the 27th ICOM General Conference “ICOM Dubai 2025,” that marks the debut of the triennial conference in the Middle East, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
Held from November 11–17 in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, the event seeks to showcase the Arab region’s expanding role and influence in boosting cultural dialogue and innovation within the museums sector.
Themed “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities,” the ICOM Dubai 2025 serves as a unique platform to share ideas and expertise and build strategic partnerships.
Farah Abushullaih, Head of Museums at Ithra, explained that the Kingdom’s participation in the conference aims to demonstrate how heritage and innovation can intersect in artistic and craft practices.
Notably, the center is presenting three research papers at the conference, as follows:
- “Sustainability of the Craft: Ithra Museum Methodology as a Model for Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Work”
- “The Power of Independence through Educating Unskilled Employees to Highly Skilled Professionals at Ithra Museum”
- “Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet”
At the conference pavilion, Ithra is also showcasing its curatorial approach across art, craft, collections, as well as education, through three flagship projects:
- “Khoos”
- “In Praise of the Artisan”
- “Hijrah: In the Footsteps of the Prophet”
These projects stand as a testament to Ithra’s ability to bridge tangible cultural heritage with contemporary creative practices.
The center is also screening the short film ‘Sa’fa’ (A Frond) by Mahmoud Kaabour, providing audiences with a poetic exploration of palm-frond weaving in Al-Ahsa Oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
