The Group of Seven (G7) countries called for de-escalation in the Middle East, stressing that Iran cannot possess a nuclear weapon.
In a joint statement following their recent summit in Canada, the leaders of the G7 – including the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan, in addition to the EU – reaffirmed their commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East, while underscoring their support to Israel.
“We, the leaders of the G7, reiterate our commitment to peace and stability in the Middle East. In this context, we affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel. We also affirm the importance of the protection of civilians,” the statement said.
The G7 leaders accused Iran of being the main source of instability in the region, stressing their position that firmly rejects Tehran’s possession of a nuclear weapon. “Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror. We have been consistently clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon,” they noted.
Moreover, they called for de-escalation in the region, including a ceasefire in Gaza. “We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza,” the statement said.
The G7 leaders also added that they will “remain vigilant to the implications for international energy markets and stand ready to coordinate, including with like-minded partners, to safeguard market stability.”
Israel attacked Iran on June 13, 2025, in a bid to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, Iran insists that its nuclear program is for civilian purposes. Since then, the two countries have been exchanging heavy airstrikes, with at least 224 people killed in Iran, mostly civilians, and 24 people killed in Israel, according to Reuters.
