India, Canada Seal Landmark Uranium Deal, Expand Strategic Cooperation

India and Canada on Monday signed a set of strategic agreements in New Delhi, strengthening cooperation across key sectors, including critical minerals, while advancing a landmark uranium supply deal to boost nuclear energy generation, according to AFP.

From technology collaboration to the promotion of renewable energy, the deals came at a crucial moment as both countries are unfolding a new chapter and a fresh start to their bilateral ties.

“Our ties have seen a new energy, mutual trust, and positivity,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney’s visit to New Delhi.

Revival of Relations

Canada has been recently intensifying its efforts to diversify its alliances beyond the traditional reliance on the United States, its largest trading partner.

This drive comes in response to recent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump.

Moreover, the Canadian PM has been working to rebuild Canada’s relations with India, following a sharp downturn under his predecessor, Justin Trudeau.

In 2023, Trudeau accused the Indian government of being involved in the murdering of a Sikh separatist leader—a claim firmly denied by New Delhi.

“There has been more engagement between the Canadian and Indian governments in the last year than there has been in more than two decades combined,” Carney said in New Delhi, in a speech alongside Modi.

Carney described his visit as an opportunity to expand the scope of strategic partnerships between the two countries.

Energy Partnerships

India seeks to broaden its nuclear power capacity from its current eight to 100 gigawatts by 2047.

“In civil nuclear energy, we have struck a landmark deal for long-term uranium supply,” Modi said.

Meanwhile, Carney said the two sides had agreed to launch a “strategic energy partnership with significant potential,” anchored by a CAN$2.6 billion ($1.9 billion) uranium supply agreement that would “support India’s nuclear ambitions.”

In 2025, both countries agreed to resume negotiations on a proposed free-trade accord, the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.

Defense Cooperation

Carney also noted that he aimed to conclude the “ambitious agreement” by year’s end to “reduce barriers and increase certainty,” emphasizing that the two nations were also reviving security cooperation through a new defense partnership.
