The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has announced the recovery of Israeli hostage Ilan Weiss’s body during an operation in the Gaza Strip. Weiss, 56, lost his life during Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on 7 October, 2023. The IDF also recovered the remains of a second hostage, whose identity remains undisclosed.
Following the October attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the abduction of 251 hostages, Israel launched a significant offensive in Gaza. Since then, the Hamas-run health ministry reports that at least 63,025 Palestinians have died in the ongoing conflict.
Ilan Weiss died while defending Kibbutz Beeri on the day of the attack and Hamas, subsequently, took his body to Gaza. On that same day, Weiss’s wife, Shiri, and daughter, Noga, were taken hostage by Hamas but they were released during a temporary ceasefire in November 2023.
National Response and Hostage Situation
Israeli President Isaac Herzog praised Weiss’s bravery, stating, “Ilan showed courage and noble spirit when he fought the terrorists on that dark day,” commending Weiss’s family for their “extraordinary strength in their struggle for his return.” Currently, 48 hostages remain in Gaza, with Israel believing that 20 of them are still alive.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces intense domestic pressure to negotiate a deal for the return of all remaining hostages as massive protests have erupted, demanding an end to the war. Despite this, Israel continues its offensive to take control of Gaza City and the entire Strip. However, Netanyahu argues that defeating Hamas will ultimately secure the hostages’ release.
International Concerns
Western nations and the United Nations have expressed concerns about the humanitarian impact of military operations in densely populated areas of Gaza. Avichay Adraee, the Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesman, stated that the military is intensifying its operations on the outskirts of Gaza City, emphasizing that Israel would “deepen our strikes.”
Later on Friday, Hamas warned that the planned offensive in Gaza City would expose hostages to the same risks as its fighters. A spokesperson for Hamas’s armed wing stated, “We will take care of the prisoners the best we can, and they will be with our fighters in the combat and confrontation zones.”
The health ministry in Gaza reported that Israeli fire killed 59 people across the besieged territory on Friday, with footage from Reuters showed a line of bodies in white bags outside Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, where grieving relatives gathered.
Escalating Humanitarian Crisis
Last week, a UN-backed organization raised the food insecurity status in parts of Gaza to the highest level, confirming famine for the first time, though Israel denies that starvation exists in the territory.
Since the launch of the offensive on 14 August, approximately 20,000 people have fled south from Gaza City, while an additional 40,000 have moved further north, according to the UN’s humanitarian affairs office.
Most of Gaza’s population has faced repeated displacement with over 90% of homes are estimated to be damaged or destroyed, and the healthcare, water, sanitation, and hygiene systems have collapsed. The ongoing conflict continues to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region.
