‘I Won’t Be Involved’: Macron Vows Exit from Politics after 2027

French President Emmanuel Macron has stunned the nation by announcing he will leave politics after the 2027 election, sharing this definitive career update during an official two-day visit to a Franco-Cypriot school in Nicosia on Friday.

“I wasn’t involved in politics before [becoming president] and I won’t be involved afterwards,” the 46-year-old leader told the students. This statement marks a sharp shift from his previous rhetoric. In July 2025, Macron told a youth rally, “I will need you in two years, in five years, in 10 years.”

While that earlier speech sparked rumors of a 2032 comeback, his latest comments suggest a total withdrawal from the public stage. Furthermore, history remains against him because no French president has ever successfully returned to office after leaving the Elysee Palace.

Reflections on a Complicated Legacy

The President admitted that the final years of his presidency present significant challenges, especially regarding his controversial domestic legislative record.

“After nine years, you have to hold onto what you’ve done well and try to go further,” Macron explained candidly. He also noted that “sometimes you have to fix things you’ve done wrong” while managing the nation’s complex expectations.

Macron’s hallmark reform involved raising the retirement age to 64, but the legislation remains suspended until after the next election. Consequently, his party struggles to find stable footing after losing its majority in the lower house during the 2024 elections.

Critics, including members of his own Renaissance party, still slam his decision to dissolve parliament following a far-right victory. In a recent New Year speech, Macron finally admitted his choice brought political instability instead of solutions for the French people. Consequently, he now focuses on balancing his achievements with these unfinished reforms before his inevitable departure in 2027.
