Trump Threatens Retaliatory Tariffs on UK over Digital Services Tax

US President Donald Trump said he would impose tariffs on the United Kingdom if Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not abandon the digital services tax, according to The Telegraph, which cited an interview with the president on Friday.

Trump told The Telegraph that he would impose “a big tariff on the UK” if it does not abandon its digital services tax, which is widely seen as disproportionately affecting US technology firms, Reuters reported.

In 2020, the UK introduced its two percent digital services tax.

This policy has drawn criticism from Donald Trump and his predecessor, Democratic President Joe Biden.

The levy targets large technology companies, such as Apple, Alphabet’s Google, and Meta.

“I don’t like it ‌when they target American companies, because basically, you’re talking about our great American companies … and the top companies in the world,” ‌Trump said.

The president also said the United States could “very easily” respond to the UK’s digital services tax by imposing substantial tariffs on British goods, warning that London should “be careful” while tackling such policies.

In the light of this, he threatened that if the tax is not withdrawn, Washington would “probably put a big tariff on the UK.”

These remarks come ahead of a planned visit to the United States by Britain’s King Charles next week.
