From Meta to Apple … Why Tech Performance Decline Despite Progress?

In a seemingly strange contradiction, rapid technological progress could not prevent “millions of technological problems” from occurring to users of world-famous applications, according to Al Sharq Al Awsat.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) reported, citing the “Downdetector” website, which monitors Internet outages, that at the beginning of April, more than 1.75 million problems were reported by users of the “WhatsApp” application, which is owned by the “Meta” company. Around the world, tens of thousands of problems have also been reported in Apple’s App Store.

Technology experts believe that such problems, which have repeatedly struck famous technology companies recently, are not a coincidence.

Brennen Smith, vice president of technology at Ookla, the parent company of Downdetector, says that these numbers reflect the reality of an increasing number of problems and outages among users of the giant technology companies’ applications.

Smith explains to the BBC that “the Internet is not becoming more stable,” and that to understand why this is the case, we must understand more about the Internet itself.

He adds: “Like software, the Internet consists of several layers. “Every time regulators require changes to platforms or apps, such as making data more accessible or adding new features like AI-powered chatbots, new layers are added.”

“Adding more layers and complexity increases the risk of errors,” Smith asserts. “At the present time, with the great development, especially in the field of artificial intelligence, there is an incentive for giant companies to integrate new technology that changes the rules of the game in their products and services.”

“I think with the push towards increased innovation, we will start to see technology companies move faster, but that comes with the risk of potentially disrupting things,” he adds.

When it comes to the Internet, various factors can cause interruptions, like typos in code, power outages, cyber attacks, and severe weather conditions such as heat waves and natural disasters. These can affect data centers, the large halls housing servers crucial for online services

Another issue arises as many large companies transitioned from managing servers internally to storing data on virtual clouds over the past decade.

Sam Kirkman, from the cybersecurity company NetSPI, told the BBC that although this enables these companies to do more work and development “faster than things were before,” it also means that a one-time power outage having one cloud service provider in one place can negatively impact many of the platforms, technologies, and services that companies provide.
