China forcefully accused Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer of launching “groundless accusations” on Tuesday, following his warning that Beijing poses a substantial national security threat. However, despite the British government attempting to reset ties with the world’s second-largest economy, spying accusations and Hong Kong tensions continuously strain relations.
Starmer previously became the first British prime minister meeting Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November 2024, consequently suggesting relations were tentatively improving. Nevertheless, speaking at the annual Lady Mayor’s Banquet on Monday, Starmer declared China “poses real national security threats” and promised London would continue raising human rights issues.
In response, the Chinese embassy in London announced on Tuesday it “firmly opposes the British side’s remarks,” accusing Starmer of groundlessly interfering in its internal affairs. The embassy asserted, “China’s development poses no threat to any nation,” releasing a statement labeling Starmer’s preceding remarks as “erroneous.”
Diplomatic Strategy and Security Vows
Starmer promised on Monday that his government’s future China policy approach would certainly no longer blow “hot and cold” between cooperation and confrontation. Specifically, Starmer called the failure to maintain a relationship with China a “dereliction of duty,” demanding a “serious approach.”
The prime minister asserted, “You can work and trade with a country… while simultaneously protecting yourself,” highlighting the necessary balance between engagement and security.
He vowed to engage China on critical issues like trade, nuclear proliferation, AI, and climate change, seeking common ground. Furthermore, he promised security services updated powers and necessary tools specifically designed to deter the perceived threat posed by Beijing.
In November, Britain’s domestic intelligence agency notably warned that Chinese spies, disguised cleverly as headhunters, had aggressively targeted parliamentarians online. Moreover, this warning emerged after Britain’s public prosecutor dropped a high-profile case against two men accused of spying for China, who quickly denied the serious spying allegations in both of these high-stakes diplomatic instances.
Hong Kong Standoff Escalates
Finally, a proposed vast new Chinese embassy planned for construction in London has also successfully triggered significant security and human rights concerns, with the UK government must ultimately deciding whether it will grant permission for the new embassy construction before 10 December.
Starmer also confirmed Britain would certainly continue raising specific human rights concerns with Beijing, particularly focusing on “curtailment of freedom in Hong Kong.”
Consequently, the Chinese embassy responded Tuesday, sharply asserting that Hong Kong issues represented exclusively China’s “internal affairs.” “Britain holds neither the qualification nor the right to make unfounded remarks or improperly interfere,” the statement fiercely concluded.
