Bondi Hero: Ahmed al-Ahmed’s Bravery Saves Lives in Australia

In an unusual heroic act, an Australian citizen of Syrian origin risked his own life to save others amid a terror attack at Bondi Beach.

Ahmed al-Ahmed, a 44-year-old father of two young girls, rushed from behind a car towards one of the shooters and wrestled a gun off him. As a result, he was shot multiple times and suffered a serious injury. He is currently in a critical but stable condition and may lose his arm.

The attack at Bondi Beach in Australia, which took place on Sunday, December 14, 2025, claimed the lives of at least 16 people. But Ahmed’s bravery prevented more deaths.

In recognition of his courage and selflessness, Ahmed al-Ahmed was hailed as a hero by the Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese; the New South Wales Premier, Chris Minns; and the US President, Donald Trump.

Ahmed’s heroic act also received recognition worldwide, with people celebrating his bravery across social media platforms, where his story has become a global symbol of courage.

The GoFundMe page has raised more than A$2.5mn (£1.24mn; $1.65mn) in community donations from 43,000 people from around the world for Ahmed as receives treatment at the hospital.

In response, Ahmed expressed his gratitude to the people who donated, asking if he deserves the money. In a sign of modesty, Ahmed downplayed his bravery, saying that it was simply an act from the heart.

“Stand with each other, all human beings, and forget everything bad in the past and keep going to save life. Save lives,” Ahmed said in a brief message.
