Australia Invites Israeli President to Visit Following Bondi Attack

Australian Prime Minister ‍Anthony Albanese has invited Israeli President Isaac Herzog to an official visit to Australia amid growing concerns following the Bondi Beach attack at the Jewish community Chanukah event, according to Reuters.

Albanese announced on Tuesday that he spoke to Herzog via phone and shared his “profound shock and dismay” about the terror attack that killed 15 people.

“Prime Minister Albanese advised President Herzog that, upon the recommendation of the Australian government, the Governor-General of Australia will issue an invitation in accordance with protocol to President Herzog to visit Australia as soon as possible,” Mr Albanese’s statement read.

In response, the Israeli President said that he would accept the invitation, noting that he received a similar invitation from the President of the ‍Zionist Federation of Australia.

The date of Herzog’s visit to Tel Aviv has not been publicly announced.

The Zionist Federation of Australia (ZFA) also confirmed that Herzog would travel to Australia in the new year as a formal state visit.

On Sunday, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar urged Jews in Western countries to move and live in Israel as an attempt to encounter growing antisemitism.

“Jews have the right to live in safety everywhere. But we see and fully understand what is happening, and we have a certain historical experience. Today, Jews are being hunted across the world,” Saar said.

Since the outbreak of Israel’s war on Gaza in October 2023, Israeli leaders have repeatedly condemned an increase in antisemitism in Western countries and accused their governments of failing to control it.
