Arab, Islamic Solidarity Against Misinformation on Palestine
Participants at the International Forum on “Media and its Role in Inciting Hatred and Violence” expressed solidarity against bias and misinformation concerning Palestine.
The Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in collaboration with the Muslim World League organized the event.
Palestinian Journalists Share Their Experiences
The opening session included direct participation from Palestinian journalists in Gaza via video call. They shared their experiences and the suffering endured during the Gaza war.
The journalists talked especially about the days when the Israeli occupation cut off communication networks and internet access, committing the most heinous crimes.
They also mentioned their colleagues and how the Israeli Occupational Forces were targeting them and their families deliberately.
Addressing Bias and Misinformation
The forum included three sessions. One of them focused on “International Media’s Bias and Misinformation ” (with Palestine as a case study).
This session discussed how media bias in this issue has led to the distortion of facts and the stirring of hatred. It also explored the mechanisms of misinformation used in covering events in Palestine.
Leaders’ Perspectives
Muhammad bin Abdul Karim, Secretary-General of the Muslim World League, said that the “criminal assault on innocent children and women in Gaza is a smirch on the face of humanity.”
Moreover, Ahmed Assaf, the Palestinian Minister of Information, remarked that the Palestinian narrative has been subjected to media bias and distortion for 75 years. Assaf describe the reality of the Israeli occupation as an attempt to erase history. This would translate to erasing the present and the future
Western Media’s Role
Western powers and their media outlets were quick to condemn Hamas’s surprise attack and distort the information related to this crisis. Furthermore, the Western media was clearly biased towards the Israeli perspective of self-defense at all costs.
Thus, most American and European media outlets frame the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as a one-sided war. They use language biased towards Israel, often ignoring the crimes committed against the residents of Gaza.
