Arab Cybersecurity Ministers to Convene in Riyadh for Inaugural Meeting

Saudi Arabia will host the first Arab Cybersecurity Ministers Council meeting on Monday in Riyadh. The National Cybersecurity Authority will represent the Kingdom at this significant event. Ministers and officials responsible for cybersecurity from Arab League member states will attend. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit will also participate in the meeting.

Agenda and Objectives

The council’s agenda includes drafting the Arab Cybersecurity Strategy for 2023–2027. This strategy aims to create a secure Arab cyberspace integrated into the global digital economy. Key initiatives involve developing a unified cybersecurity assessment framework and enhancing training and awareness. Establishing a regional Arab Cybersecurity Incident Response Team (CSIRT) is also a priority. Promoting conformity with international standards and supporting research and development are essential components.

Establishment and Significance

The Arab League established the council based on Saudi Arabia’s proposal, with unanimous support from Arab countries. The council’s secretariat and executive office will be based in Riyadh. Its primary goal is to enhance cooperation and coordinate efforts among Arab states on cybersecurity issues. By sharing knowledge and expertise, the council aims to safeguard member states’ interests in international cybersecurity organizations. It also seeks to develop a unified Arab stance on cybersecurity matters in international forums.

Regional Cybersecurity Initiatives

In addition to the Arab Cybersecurity Ministers Council, regional efforts are underway to bolster cybersecurity. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) recently launched the Gulf Cybersecurity Strategy. This initiative aims to create a safe cyberspace environment to protect GCC countries from cyber threats. It emphasizes information sharing and collaboration among member states.

The inaugural meeting of the Arab Cybersecurity Ministers Council marks a significant milestone. It reflects a unified commitment to strengthening cybersecurity across the Arab region. Through collaboration and shared initiatives, Arab states aim to create a secure and trustworthy cyberspace. This environment will promote growth and prosperity for all member states.
