US Slams China over ‘Unnecessary’ Military Drills Near Taiwan

The US State Department condemned Chinese military drills around Taiwan on Thursday, labeling the recent war games as “unnecessary” provocations. Washington officially urged Beijing to cease its military pressure and choose diplomatic engagement over regional intimidation tactics.

“China’s military activities and rhetoric toward Taiwan and others in the region increase tensions unnecessarily,” stated State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott. Consequently, the United States urges Beijing to exercise restraint and stop its ongoing military pressure against the democratic island. Furthermore, the State Department emphasized that China should pursue meaningful dialogue rather than continuing its aggressive encircling maneuvers.

Beijing recently deployed dozens of fighter jets, navy ships, and coastguard vessels to surround Taiwan’s main island earlier this week. These military drills simulated a total blockade of major Taiwanese ports, prompting Taipei to condemn the exercises as highly provocative.

Strategic Stance and Regional Stability

The US maintains a firm commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait while opposing unilateral changes. “We oppose unilateral changes to the status quo, including by force or coercion,” Pigott added during his official press statement.

Despite the State Department’s stern warning, President Donald Trump appeared to downplay the immediate threat of a full-scale invasion. He noted his strong relationship with President Xi Jinping and suggested that these naval exercises have occurred for many years. However, the Trump administration recently approved a massive $11 billion arms package to bolster Taiwan’s defensive capabilities against such threats.

This latest show of force marks the sixth major round of Chinese maneuvers since 2022. Tensions initially spiked following a high-profile visit to Taiwan by former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which deeply enraged Beijing. While the United States remains committed to Taiwan’s self-defense, it continues to maintain strategic ambiguity regarding direct military intervention.
