President Donald Trump held a critical policy meeting Wednesday on Gaza’s future with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and ex-envoy Jared Kushner. A senior White House official confirmed the meeting focused on Israel’s war and post-conflict planning.
Top officials joined Trump, Blair, and Kushner to analyze the hostage situation, boost food aid efforts, and outline reconstruction strategies. The official emphasized this was a routine policy session common within the administration. However, the timing reflects intense pressure over Gaza’s worsening conditions.
Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, previously spearheaded Middle East initiatives during the first term. Blair, meanwhile, led Britain during the controversial 2003 Iraq War. Their involvement signals Trump’s reliance on familiar advisors for this complex challenge. This approach continues despite earlier campaign promises for a swift Gaza resolution.
Trump’s Shifting Gaza Stance
Trump initially proposed a US takeover of Gaza and permanent Palestinian displacement in February. However, global leaders and rights experts immediately condemned the plan as illegal ethnic cleansing. International law strictly forbids forced population transfers, but Trump himself later rebranded the idea as developing Gaza into a “Riviera of the Middle East.” Notably, Kushner had floated a similar concept involving clearing Palestinians for waterfront development just last year.
The Tony Blair Institute reportedly worked on post-war Gaza plans, though it denied endorsing forced relocations. Separately, Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar to discuss regional security as Saar explicitly rejected any future Palestinian state following their talks.
Escalating Humanitarian Crisis
Gaza’s situation grows increasingly desperate seven months into Trump’s second term as a brief ceasefire collapsed after Israeli strikes killed approximately 400 Palestinians on 18 March. Shocking images of starving children now dominate global news feeds. Consequently, criticism of Israel’s conduct intensifies worldwide despite its strong US alliance.
Gaza health authorities report over 62,000 Palestinian deaths since October 2023. Furthermore, the conflict triggered a severe hunger crisis and displaced Gaza’s entire population internally. Israel faces genocide and war crime accusations at international courts over these actions. It firmly denies all such charges.
