Saudi Arabia Launches Volunteer Program in 20 Medical Specialties to Aid Syria

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) announced the opening of volunteer opportunities for specialized Saudi medical professionals to support the healthcare sector in Syria and address its urgent needs in more than 20 specialties. This is being facilitated through the Saudi “Amal” Volunteer Program which focuses on meeting the healthcare needs of affected countries.

Amal Program

The center called on all interested specialists to register for the “Amal” program, which will run for an entire year to support Syria’s healthcare sector, damaged by recent events. The program aims to provide emergency and medical services to those in need across various specialties, alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people through the contributions of volunteer professionals.

Dr. Samer Al-Jutaily, the spokesperson for the center, stated that the external volunteering platform launched by the center provides an opportunity to register in several urgent medical specialties to support the healthcare sector in various Syrian cities, especially during the current humanitarian crisis in Syria.

Saudi Healthcare Volunteers

In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, Al-Jutaily explained that the list of required specialties was determined after consultations with the responsible health authorities in Syria. He emphasized that the program aims to provide an opportunity for Saudi healthcare volunteers to address the needs of Syria’s healthcare sector across all regions of the country. Al-Jutaily also highlighted the efforts of Saudi healthcare professionals who have volunteered their expertise and contributions through the program.

He added, “Saudi healthcare volunteers have made a distinguished international presence through numerous initiatives where they provided assistance and support to people in various geographical areas. They have left a positive impact in approximately 57 countries around the world, performing more than 200,000 operations across different specialties.”

Al-Jutaily pointed out that the experience accumulated through the program will contribute to extending a helping hand to the Syrian side which is facing significant challenges during this phase. The program will play a vital role in saving the lives of many Syrians by offering various forms of medical care in the upcoming period.

Required Specialties for Volunteer

The required specialties for volunteer personnel to join include: pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology surgery, general surgery, emergency medicine, psychological support, orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, open-heart and catheterization surgery, nephrology, general medicine, pulmonology, pediatrics, anesthesia, nursing, family medicine, physical therapy, speech and language therapy, prosthetics, cochlear implantation, and several other medical specialties.

The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSRelief) stated that the “Amal” program is being launched under the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s charitable, humanitarian, and pioneering role toward affected communities worldwide.

Moreover, the statement, published on the registration page, emphasized the significant impact of providing emergency and medical services in alleviating human suffering and enabling a dignified life, with the participation of exceptional Saudi volunteer professionals.

As the air and land bridges launched by Saudi Arabia continue, with the arrival of the sixth relief plane and nearly 60 trucks loaded with more than 541 tons of aid, a Saudi delegation from the volunteer department of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center visited several hospitals and medical centers in Syria on Sunday. Additionally, the field tour aimed to assess the healthcare situation and identify urgent and necessary needs for the sector.

The field visit was conducted to evaluate the state of the healthcare sector in Syria and determine its requirements in terms of personnel and medical supplies. This followed a meeting between a delegation from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center and officials from the Syrian Ministry of Health in Damascus, during which they discussed the urgent and critical medical needs of Syrian hospitals.

Air, Land Relief Bridges

 

On the front of Saudi Arabia’s air and land relief bridges, the sixth Saudi relief plane, operated by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, arrived at Damascus Airport on Sunday. The plane carried food, medical, and shelter supplies to help alleviate the severe hardships currently faced by the Syrian people.

Additionally, on Sunday morning, the first convoy of the Saudi land relief bridge crossed the Jordanian Jaber border crossing en route to Syria. Sixty trucks carrying more than 541 tons of food, medical, and shelter supplies arrived as part of the initial efforts of the Saudi land bridge to provide aid to the Syrian people.

Finally,  Al-Jutaily stated that the land bridge supports aid delivery across all Syrian territories. It carries large quantities of food, medical, and shelter supplies, which are transported to needy areas after arriving in Damascus. He added that the land bridge includes heavy medical equipment, like MRI machines, X-ray, and CT scanners, which cannot be transported by air.
