Pakistan, Iran Interior Ministers Discuss De-escalation Amid Renewed Regional Tensions

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi held talks with his Iranian counterpart, Eskandar Momeni, on the sidelines of a regional security meeting in Kyrgyzstan, as both sides explored ways to ease rising tensions in the Middle East following a fresh escalation despite ongoing diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran.
The meeting took place a day after Pakistan condemned Iranian drone and missile strikes targeting Kuwait and Bahrain, warning that renewed hostilities risk undermining diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions between the United States and Iran.
Naqvi and Momeni met in Bishkek during a gathering of interior and public security ministers from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
In a brief statement, Pakistan’s Interior Ministry said the two ministers discussed bilateral relations as well as the latest developments in the region. Both sides emphasized the importance of sustaining diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability.
Pakistan
Pakistan has increasingly positioned itself as a mediator between Washington and Tehran. In April, it facilitated a high-level round of talks between the two sides, although the discussions failed to produce a breakthrough.
Since the conflict erupted in late February, Pakistani officials have maintained contact with leaders in both countries, conveying messages and peace proposals aimed at preventing further escalation. Islamabad also played a key role in helping secure a fragile ceasefire on April 8.
While the ceasefire has largely held, negotiations have stalled over disputes related to Iran’s uranium enrichment program and the Strait of Hormuz, which Tehran closed following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on the Iranian capital.
Naqvi has visited Iran in recent weeks and held a series of high-level meetings as diplomatic engagement between the two neighbors intensified.
The latest talks come as regional tensions have flared once again, with Iranian and U.S. forces carrying out intermittent strikes against each other, raising concerns over the prospects for renewed diplomacy.
