Hajj 2026: SFDA Laboratories Operate 24/7 to Ensure Pilgrims Safety

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has significantly bolstered its laboratory readiness for the Hajj season, by implementing 24/7 operations and deploying cutting-edge technologies, as the authority maintains the highest safety and quality standards for millions of pilgrims visiting the Kingdom.

SFDA laboratories currently receive and analyze diverse samples from field inspection teams. These facilities conduct urgent testing to proactively safeguard the health of the guests of Allah. Furthermore, the labs support epidemiological investigations into suspected food poisoning cases while constantly monitoring operational performance indicators.

Recent data highlights the authority’s massive scale of operations. So far this season, laboratories have processed 857 samples and completed 1,856 individual tests across 465 separate requests. These figures demonstrate the high operational efficiency and rapid response capabilities of the Saudi technical teams.

To ensure immediate safety, the SFDA successfully implemented a “Fast Track Mechanism.” This system allows technicians to receive, sort, and analyze samples within just one hour of arrival. Consequently, health officials can take immediate preventive action during any potential emergency.

Advanced Technology and Research

The authority utilizes sophisticated genomic analysis systems to identify pathogens and trace infection sources with precision. Additionally, teams use Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) devices for rapid microbial detection and ELISA systems to identify specific toxins.

Beyond routine diagnostic testing, the SFDA conducts specialized research in cooperation with various government entities. These safety evaluations analyze ready-made meals served to pilgrims to strengthen food safety standards throughout the Hajj.

The authority confirmed that all laboratory operations strictly adhere to international quality and biosafety standards. By relying on data-driven analysis and close coordination with relevant partners, the SFDA continues to protect pilgrim health throughout the holy season.
