Iran has submitted its response to a US proposal to end the war, sending a 14-point plan through Pakistani mediators.
US President Donald Trump, in response, said he will review Iran’s proposal, warning that strikes could resume if Tehran “misbehaves.”
New Iranian Proposal
According to Iranian media, including semiofficial Tasnim and Fars agencies as well as state-owned Press TV, Tehran submitted a 14-point proposal via Pakistan, in response to an earlier 9-point US proposal.
The Iranian proposal focuses on ending the war on all fronts and the withdrawal of American troops from Iran’s periphery. Earlier this week, Iran proposed a three-phased plan, with the first phase requiring the US and Israel to end the war and provide guarantees not to start it again.
The second phase included the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for lifting US naval blockade, while the third phase would start negotiations over the nuclear issue. However, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with that proposal.
Key Points
According to Iranian media, Iran’s latest proposal calls for ending the war and resolving all issues within 30 days, instead of a two-month ceasefire proposed by the US.
Furthermore, it demands guarantees against future military aggression, the withdrawal of all US troops from areas surrounding Iran, an end to the naval blockade, and an end to fighting on all fronts, including Lebanon.
It also calls for the release of Iran’s frozen assets, the payment of reparations, the lifting of sanctions, and the establishment of a new governing mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s Response
Asked about the new proposal, Trump told reporters that he was reviewing it but warned that the US could restart strikes if Iran “misbehaves.”
“They told me about the concept of the deal. They’re going to give me the exact wording now,” Trump said before heading to Miami.
Replying to a question about military strikes, Trump said: “I don’t want to say that. I mean, I can’t tell that to a reporter. If they misbehave, if they do something bad, right now we’ll see. But it’s a possibility that could happen.”
Shortly after, Trump suggested that he might not accept the proposal. “I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years,” he posted on Truth Social.
Diplomacy or Confrontation
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, said that the new proposal was “aimed at the permanent end” of the war, according to Iranian broadcaster IRIB.
“Now the ball is in the United States’ court to choose either the path of diplomacy or continuation of a confrontational approach,” he said, adding that Tehran was “ready for both paths.”
Meanwhile, the deputy commander of Khatam al-Anbiya, Mohammad Jafar Asadi, suggested that a renewed conflict with the US was likely. “Evidence has shown that the United States is not committed to any promises or agreements,” he said, according to Fars.
