Saudi Arabia Ramps up Diplomatic Outreach as US–Iran Tensions Mount

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, held separate calls with regional counterparts to discuss unfolding developments in Tehran, according to Al Arabiya.

This diplomatic outreach comes at a crucial moment of increasing tensions as Washington deliberates its next steps on Iran.

Prince Faisal spoke with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, in a call that addressed regional developments and stressed the significance of safeguarding security and stability.

He also spoke separately with Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi and Qatar’s top diplomat Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman, with discussions focusing on regional developments and joint efforts to foster security and stability.

Saudi Arabia’s intensified diplomatic outreach came on the heels of several reports suggesting Washington was weighing a potential strike against Iran, as the country grappled with anti-government protests and a reported crackdown on demonstrators.

Concerns over a possible attack increased after US officials affirmed Wednesday that the military had begun pulling some personnel from Qatar’s al-Udeid Air Base, the largest American base in the Middle East and home to approximately 10,000 troops.

On Wednesday, a source close to the Saudi government told AFP that Riyadh has assured Iran it will not allow its airspace or territory to be used in any military action against Tehran.
