Iran Protests Turn Deadly as Economic Unrest Sparks Clashes

Security forces killed at least 16 protesters during a week of nationwide unrest over Iran’s soaring inflation, rights groups reported on Sunday, after clashes intensified as demonstrations spread from bazaar traders to university students and provincial cities chanting against clerical rulers. HRANA documented 582 arrests while police chief Ahmad-Reza Radan confirmed targeting protest leaders in digital spaces recently.

US President Donald Trump threatened intervention, declaring Friday: “We are locked and loaded and ready to go.”

Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei immediately vowed Iran “will not yield to the enemy” amid retaliatory threats against US forces.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed support, stating: “We stand in solidarity with the struggle of the Iranian people for freedom, liberty and justice.”

Economic Desperation Fuels Fury

Iran’s economy crumbles with inflation exceeding 36% since March and the rial halving against the dollar, as years of sanctions, failing utilities, and predicted 2026 recession deepened public misery before protests erupted. Authorities adopted a dual strategy: offering economic dialogue while Khamenei insisted “rioters should be put in their place.”

Violence peaked in western Iran and Tehran despite Qom’s governor reporting two deaths during conservative stronghold unrest. State media and rights groups continue disputing casualty figures as Reuters cannot independently verify claims.

The crisis marks Iran’s largest protests in three years, exploiting unprecedented economic fragility and international isolation. Authorities detained social media administrators organizing demonstrations even as provincial cities joined the uprising.
