US assures commitment to defend Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Defense Minister, Prince Khalid bin Salman, is in Washington for talks with senior officials.
Prince Khalid bin Salman met with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Saudi Arabia’s defence relationship.
Prince Khalid bin Salman also met with senior military officials at the Pentagon, including Colin Cale, the Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, to address problems such as efforts to halt the Yemen war.
“We are committed alongside Saudi Arabia to counter Iran’s destabilising activities,” the Pentagon said, adding that it will “work with them to end the war in Yemen.”
“The United States is dedicated to defence relations with Saudi Arabia,” the US Department of Defense stated.
He also criticised the Houthi militia’s cross-border raids, which were carried out with Iranian support.
On Tuesday, the Saudi Deputy Defense Minister met with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan to discuss the strong partnership between the US and Saudi Arabia, regional security, and the American commitment to assisting Saudi Arabia in defending its territory against pro-Iranian groups attacks.
The two leaders also talked about how important it is to coordinate efforts to ensure a solid economic recovery, progress climate problems, and avoid Middle East escalation.
Prince Khalid bin Salman will meet with US officials on Wednesday, according to the US State Department.
