The “Gulf Shield 2026” military exercise commenced in Saudi Arabia on Sunday, featuring participation from all six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This exercise underscores the importance of joint defense cooperation among Gulf states, even amid regional tensions.
The “Gulf Shield 2026” exercise aims to enhance combat readiness, strengthen joint military operations, and achieve operational integration according to best practices. The exercise includes a series of drills and scenarios designed to test readiness and the effectiveness of responses to various threats, thereby bolstering the Gulf region’s deterrence capabilities.
According to the Saudi Ministry of Defense, the exercise is a key example of regional defense cooperation, as it reflects the Gulf states’ commitment to maintaining security and stability, as well as fostering collective military action to address current and future challenges.
Regional Tensions
The exercise takes place against the backdrop of a recent rift between Saudi Arabia and the UAE over the situation in Yemen. Last month, the Southern Transitional Council (STC), backed by the UAE, captured the eastern provinces of Hadhramaut and al-Mahra, which account for nearly half of Yemen’s territory and share borders with Saudi Arabia. Riyadh accused the UAE of pushing the STC to carry out military operations along the kingdom’s southern border, an accusation Abu Dhabi denied.
Despite these tensions, the participation of the UAE in the “Gulf Shield 2026” exercise highlights the ongoing commitment to regional defense cooperation.
Broader Security Concerns
Security concerns in the Gulf have been rising following two attacks on Qatar last year: an Iranian missile strike on the US Al Udeid Airbase and an Israeli strike on a Hamas meeting in Doha. These incidents highlighted the need for a unified defensive posture in the Gulf.
Moreover, at the 46th GCC Summit in Bahrain last month, member states focused on finalizing a joint defensive air shield. GCC Secretary General Jasem Albudaiwi emphasized the importance of completing this long-discussed regional air defense network.
In September, Gulf defense officials met in Doha after the attacks on Qatar and agreed to step up intelligence sharing, develop new missile warning systems, and hold joint air defense drills.
Consequently, the “Gulf Shield 2026” exercise is a crucial step in reinforcing joint Gulf military action, as it plays an important role in supporting the security, stability, and safety of GCC member states. The exercise also aims to develop the operational capabilities of participating forces, unify military concepts, exchange field expertise, and improve the efficiency of joint planning and execution.
The “Gulf Shield 2026” exercise demonstrates the depth of defense partnerships among GCC countries and their readiness to address regional challenges effectively. Despite ongoing tensions, the commitment to joint military action remains strong, underscoring the importance of collective security in the Gulf region.
