Trump Renews Threats to Take Over Greenland

US President Donald Trump on Sunday intensified his push for Greenland’s annexation, claiming that the Arctic territory should join the United States, according to AFP.

Trump has repeatedly revealed his desire to annex the island despite calls by Denmark’s Prime Minister to stop “threatening” the territory.

“We need Greenland from the standpoint of national security, and Denmark is not going to be able to do it,” Trump said in response to a reporter’s question.

The US military operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife on Saturday and took them to New York has sparked several concerns for Greenland.

“We’ll worry about Greenland in about two months… let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days,” Trump added.

In response, the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged Washington to stop “threatening its historical ally.”

“I have to say this very clearly to the United States: it is absolutely absurd to say that the United States should take control of Greenland,” Frederiksen said in a statement.

She also noted that Denmark, “and thus Greenland,” was a NATO member which means that they are protected by the agreement’s security guarantees.

Capture of Maduro

On Saturday, American special operations forces captured Mr. Maduro and his wife after accusations by Washington of running a “corrupt, illegitimate government” fueled by an extensive drug-trafficking operation that flooded the US with thousands of tons of cocaine.

Trump then announced that Washington would ‘run the country until he ensures a safe, proper, and judicious transition, according to the New York Times.

In a brief phone interview with The New York Times after the announcement, Trump celebrated the mission and described the operation as ‘brilliant.’
