China Blasts US ‘Bullying’ Over Maduro Capture at UN

China sharply condemned the United States over its military strikes in Venezuela during an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Monday. Sun Lei, chargé d’affaires of China’s mission to the UN, said China “strongly condemns the unilateral, illegal, and bullying acts by the United States.” Sun criticized Washington for launching large-scale strikes on January 3 and detaining Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, adding that US officials even hinted at further military escalation.

Many countries already expressed concern over sanctions and threats targeting Venezuela. However, Washington continued its actions and ignored repeated warnings from the global community.

UN Charter Principles Defended

Sun stated that the United States trampled on Venezuela’s sovereignty and legitimate rights, stressing that the UN Charter calls for sovereign equality, respect for internal affairs, and peaceful dispute resolution. He added that these principles safeguard global stability. However, the United States chose power over multilateralism and force over diplomacy. Moreover, he stated that China believes such actions threaten Latin America, the Caribbean, and international peace. “China firmly opposes this,” Sun said, noting strong concern worldwide.

However, China urged Washington to respect international law, stop intervening in Venezuela, and return to political negotiations. Sun called on the United States to ensure the safety of President Maduro and his wife and release them immediately, warning that history shows that military force never resolves crises. Instead, interventions create instability and human suffering. Sun cited previous conflicts in Iraq, Iran, and Latin America as examples.

Support for Venezuela and the Region

Venezuela has the right to defend national dignity, Sun said. He added that Latin American and Caribbean nations play a vital role in supporting world peace and development. Therefore, no country should claim the role of “world police.” China reaffirmed support for Venezuela’s sovereignty and urged the United States to end coercive tactics. Beijing encouraged cooperation based on equality and non-interference.

Additionally, China also expressed readiness to work with regional partners to strengthen solidarity and protect stability in Latin America and the Caribbean. Sun said China will continue supporting fairness, justice, and peaceful development.

The remarks highlighted Beijing’s growing voice in global diplomacy, and underscoring continued divisions over international intervention and sovereignty.
