US President Donald Trump urged international allies on Saturday to deploy warships to the Strait of Hormuz to restore oil flow. This critical maritime chokepoint currently faces severe disruptions following intense military exchanges in the Middle East conflict.
The President utilized Truth Social to call for a multinational coalition to safeguard global energy supplies from Iranian interference. He specifically noted that countries affected by the “artificial constraint” should contribute their own naval assets to the region.
“Many countries… will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe,” Trump posted. Furthermore, he explicitly named China, France, Japan, South Korea, and the UK as nations that should assist the US Navy.
Escalation and Military Threats
Iranian strikes have nearly paralyzed traffic through the waterway, which handles twenty percent of the world’s crude oil and gas. Consequently, global oil prices continue to spike as the 54-kilometer-wide passage remains a volatile and dangerous combat zone.
While Trump claimed the US has “destroyed 100% of Iran’s Military capability,” he admitted the narrow waterway remains vulnerable to small-scale attacks. He warned that the US will “be bombing the hell out of the shoreline” to protect commercial tankers. Additionally, he promised that the US military would start escorting tankers through the strait “very soon” to ensure passage.
Recent US strikes targeted Kharg Island to cripple Iranian exports, yet many allies remain hesitant to join direct offensive actions. However, some European powers have already begun repositioning their naval assets to the Mediterranean and Middle East for defensive purposes.
President Emmanuel Macron recently visited a French aircraft carrier to prepare what he termed a “defensive” mission for the strait. Similarly, a British warship recently departed for the eastern Mediterranean to bolster regional defenses following a drone strike in Cyprus. One way or the other, the administration insists it will soon get the Hormuz Strait “OPEN, SAFE, and FREE!”
