Saudia Airlines Suspends Flights to Northern Saudi Arabia

Saudia Airlines suspended its flights to domestic airports located in northern Saudi Arabia, near the area of current tensions, according to Al Arabiya. A number of flights had been postponed, and others had taken off from Riyadh heading to Al Qurayyat, bordering Jordan, before turning back following the suspension decision.

Besides Saudia Airlines, Kuwait Airways announced that its flight schedule to all destinations will continue except for the countries that closed their airspace, such as: Iraq, Iran, Jordan, and Lebanon.

At the same time, the Jordanian authorities announced today that they will temporarily close their airspace to all arriving, departing and crossing aircraft, starting at 8 pm, for the next several hours, indicating that they will update this and review it continuously according to developments.

The Jordanian Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission explained that the decision aims to preserve the safety and security of civil aviation in Jordanian airspace, in light of the escalation in the region, in accordance with internationally followed standards.

Iran launched an unprecedented direct attack against Israel on Saturday night. After a suspected Israeli strike on Iranian consular building in Syria on April 1, which killed seven Iranian officers including two senior commanders, Tehran vowed revenge, putting Israel and the US on high alert.

On Saturday morning, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized an Israeli-linked container ship, the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, near the Strait of Hormuz.

Later on Saturday, Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles towards Israel in an immense aerial attack. After reports of the attack, Israel closed its airspace, and so did Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon. By Sunday morning, Israel and Jordan reopened their airspace.
