Saudi Opera Presents First Performances of Zarqa Al-Yamamah

The King Fahd Cultural Center in Riyadh presented the first performances of “Zarqa Al-Yamamah.” lt is the first and largest Saudi opera in the Arab world. It will accompany the audience on a lyrical tragic journey through the stages of one of the most famous stories passed down in the Arabian Peninsula.

The opera, which was produced by the Theater and Performing Arts Authority, will present 10 performances over 8 days, from April 25 to May 4, 2024.

Zarqa Al Yamamah is a groundbreaking international production reviving a renowned tale from pre-Islamic Arabia. It also follows the heroine’s quest to alert the Jadis tribe of an impending threat to her people’s existence.

The new exceptional work celebrates a key aspect of Arab heritage, aiming to advance theater both nationally and internationally. It  also provides a platform for emerging Saudi talents to collaborate with leading international figures.

Sultan Al-Bazie, CEO of the Theater and Performing Arts Commission, stated, “It’s a privilege to share Zarqa Al-Yamamah’s legend globally, marking a new era for Saudi Arabia’s cultural prosperity. This production signifies a milestone in international cultural exchange, uniting Saudi talent with leading global artists. We’re thrilled to debut the first performance in a series inspired by Saudi folklore.”

It is noteworthy that the artistic director of the work is Ivan Vukcevic and the theatrical director of the opera is Daniel Finzi Baska, while Pablo Gonzalez leads the Dresden Sinfoniker Orchestra with the Czech Philharmonic Choir Choir.
