Saudi-funded development projects implemented through the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) are modernizing Yemen’s transport sector and upgrading its infrastructure. The initiatives improve links between cities and provinces, ease the movement of people and goods, support trade and economic activity, and expand access to essential services and markets.
Transport investment is central to Yemen’s recovery, serving as a driver of commercial, economic, and social activity. Better roads, airports, and logistics networks improve mobility by land, sea, and air while strengthening access to health and education facilities, markets, and economic centers.
The SDRPY has expanded and rehabilitated strategic roads covering approximately 200 kilometers across several Yemeni governorates. The works aim to improve infrastructure efficiency, enhance road safety, and strengthen regional connectivity, supporting passenger travel, freight movement, and broader economic activity.
Al-Abr Corridor
The expansion and rehabilitation of the Al-Abr road is among the program’s most strategic transport projects. The first two phases, covering 90 kilometers, have been completed, while work is underway on the third phase, which spans 40 kilometers, bringing the project’s total length to 130 kilometers.
The road serves as a vital international link between Saudi Arabia and Yemen and connects several Yemeni governorates. It facilitates commercial transport and passenger movement, improves travel safety, and strengthens one of the main corridors supporting economic and commercial activity.
Roads Across Yemen
Road development has also extended to cities and governorates across the country, including the rehabilitation of internal roads in Aden, Al-Mahrah, and Socotra. These projects improve traffic flow, raise safety standards, and make it easier for residents to reach health and education facilities and commercial markets.
In Socotra, the rehabilitation of internal roads has improved mobility and reduced floodwater accumulation. The works use stone paving suited to the archipelago’s geographic and environmental conditions, enhancing infrastructure sustainability and improving services for residents.
Aden Airport Modernization
The rehabilitation and development of Aden International Airport is one of the program’s most significant projects. The airport is a key gateway connecting Yemen with regional and international markets, supporting passenger traffic, trade, and logistics services.
Earlier phases included rehabilitating the secondary runway, main passenger terminal, parking areas, and airport gates, as well as constructing facilities in the air-cargo zone. The works also strengthened operational readiness, emergency-response capabilities, and the skills of airport staff.
The third phase includes rehabilitating the main runway and upgrading air-navigation and communications systems to align operations with international civil aviation standards and requirements.
The project aims to improve services for passengers and airlines, enhance the airport’s capacity to handle international and domestic flights, and strengthen air-transport infrastructure. These efforts support economic activity, deepen economic and social links, and reinforce Aden’s role as a major economic and urban center.
Transport as Development Driver
The projects underscore the importance of transport as a key enabler of development. Improved infrastructure and connectivity facilitate the movement of people and goods, expand access to services, boost trade, and strengthen supply chains.
The SDRPY has delivered 33 transport-sector projects and initiatives as part of 300 development projects and initiatives implemented since its establishment in 2018. These interventions span 16 Yemeni governorates and cover eight vital sectors: education, health, water, energy, transport, agriculture, fisheries, and government capacity-building and development programs.
