Saudi Diplomacy at UNGA: Deepening Pakistan Ties, Supporting Polio-Free World

Saudi Arabia is making use of its participation at the 81st UN General Assembly to strengthen established partnerships while opening new avenues for cooperation in diplomacy, regional affairs, technology, and innovation.

Fostering Saudi-Pakistani Partnership

Saudi Arabia and Pakistan are making official engagement easier, signing a mutual visa-exemption agreement as Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar met on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly.

By easing visa requirements for diplomatic and special passport holders, the agreement will make official travel smoother and seamless while launching new horizons for closer coordination and broader cooperation between Riyadh and Islamabad.

The talks also casted a wider lens over the broader Saudi-Pakistani partnership, with Prince Faisal and Dar reviewing bilateral cooperation and exchanging views on recent developments in the region and diplomatic efforts to ease tensions.

Exploring tech opportunities

Elsewhere on the sidelines of the assembly, Prince Faisal met Bill Gates, Chairman of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, to discuss areas of joint cooperation and explore new opportunities in innovation and emerging technologies.

The discussions brought together senior Saudi officials, including Saudi Ambassador to the United States Princess Reema bint Bandar, Director General of the General Directorate for Policy Planning Prince Dr. Abdullah bin Khalid bin Saud Al-Kabeer, and Foreign Minister’s Advisor for Political Affairs Prince Musab bin Mohammed Al-Farhan.

A push for a polio-free world

In 2024, Saudi Arabia signed a landmark partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help protect 370 million children annually from polio and lift millions of people out of poverty across 33 Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) member countries.

The Kingdom played a pivotal role in driving down polio cases across several countries, from more than 300 in 2014 to just 12 in 2023.

Building on this progress, Saudi Arabia started to collaborate with its partners to expand access to polio vaccines, measles immunizations, and other essential health services for millions of children each year.

Advancing this cooperation, the Kingdom, in 2024, has reinforced its commitment to a polio-free future with a $500 million pledge over the next five years to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, marking its largest-ever contribution to global polio eradication efforts.
