Saudi Arabia Supports Int’l Efforts to Prevent Iran from Acquiring Nuclear Weapons
Saudi Arabia voiced grave worry over the International Atomic Energy Agency’s disclosures in its reports on verification activities under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement in Iran, its inability to fully comply with the agreement’s commitments, and its lack of openness with the IAEA.
This is a threat to the non-proliferation regime and an impediment to achieving the purposes and principles of the UN Charter relating to the maintenance of international peace and security, emphasizing its support for all international efforts aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and endangering the region and the world.
This was said at the plenary session of the Tenth Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) held at the UN Headquarters in New York by the Kingdom’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel.
Dr. Al-Wasel explained that the Kingdom pays close attention to the nuclear non-proliferation regime because it believes that peaceful cooperation between states is one of the most important ways to achieve global prosperity, prosperity, and stability. This treaty is the cornerstone of the regime, leading to its universality and full implementation of its provisions toward a future free of nuclear weapons.
He emphasized the importance of state’s commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, emphasizing the role of the UN General Assembly in urging non-party states to quickly join it and place all of their nuclear facilities under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s comprehensive safeguards system.
Ambassador Al-Wasla added that the responsibility to rid the Middle East of nuclear weapons is a collective international responsibility, and that the 1995 Middle East resolution is an integral part of the other decisions that led to the adoption of the Treaty’s indefinite extension decision, and that the 1995 Middle East resolution is valid until its implementation and full achievement of its objectives.
Al-Wasla emphasized the need of confronting and dealing with the spread of nuclear weapons in the Middle East, as the threat does not just affect the area, but the entire globe.
