Saudi Arabia Strengthens Naval Might with Three New Corvettes
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence announced a new contract with Spanish company Navantia for three additional Avante 2200 corvettes. These vessels will join the Royal Saudi Naval Force, enhancing the Kingdom’s maritime defense capabilities. Construction of the first unit will begin in 2024, with delivery of the final vessel set for 2028.
Navantia will oversee the initial delivery in Spain, while Saudi Arabia will handle the assembly and integration of the remaining two corvettes. This includes the installation of the Hazem Combat System by SAMINavantia, a joint venture between Navantia and SAMI. The collaboration demonstrates the Kingdom’s commitment to localizing military manufacturing capabilities.
Boosting Local Expertise and Advanced Manufacturing
The agreement includes training programs for over 100 Saudi engineers, who will acquire skills in shipbuilding and systems integration. Saudi Arabia will also manufacture structural blocks for the third corvette, underscoring its growing role in the defense industry. Navantia will transfer the Intellectual Property Rights of the Avante 2200 design to GAMI, enabling Saudi Arabia to produce and even export these vessels.
Navantia’s support extends beyond manufacturing. The contract includes integrated logistical support, crew training, and operational exercises. The Spanish Navy will provide advanced training at the Rota Naval Base in Spain, equipping Saudi personnel with world-class expertise.
