Saudi Arabia Elected Vice-President of UNESCO Anti-Doping Convention

In a significant stride towards bolstering sports integrity on the global stage, Saudi Arabia has been elected as the Vice-President of the UNESCO International Convention Against Doping in Sport, holding the position through 2025.

The election took place at a UNESCO meeting in Paris, showcasing the international community’s recognition of Saudi Arabia’s commitment to the anti-doping crusade.

The UNESCO International Convention Against Doping in Sport is a pivotal multilateral treaty aimed at harmonizing anti-doping commitments across the globe.

Adopted in 2005, the Convention’s primary goal is to eradicate doping, thereby protecting the essence of fair play and athletes’ health, both physical and mental.

Saudi Arabia, by virtue of its vice-presidency, is now at the forefront of these global efforts, signifying a notable ascent in its international sports diplomacy.

Additionally, Abdulaziz Al-Massaad, the Undersecretary of the Saudi Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, is designated to fill this prestigious UNESCO post. He lauded the unrelenting support for sports from Saudi leadership and acknowledged the guidance of Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, the Minister of Sports and President of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

This step underscores Saudi Arabia’s keenness in participating in international sporting forums and events, thereby enhancing its global sports outreach and cooperation.

Moreover, the election echoes Saudi Arabia’s broader ambition of aligning itself with global anti-doping norms, further exemplified by its hosting of the fourth formal meeting of the Bureau of the eighth session of the Conference of Parties (COP8 Bureau) to the International Convention against Doping in Sport.

Saudi Arabia’s vice-presidency is a testament to its growing influence in the global sports realm, demonstrating its readiness to collaborate with international entities in fostering a doping-free sports culture.

As Saudi Arabia continues to uphold the UNESCO anti-doping mandate, the global sports community inches closer to a level playing field, where the spirit of competition thrives unadulterated by the scourge of doping.
