The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development is celebrating International Youth Day by highlighting the Kingdom’s dedication to empowering its young people.
Observed each year on August 12, International Youth Day recognizes the vital contributions of youth to societal development. It also aims to increase awareness of the issues they face.
This year’s global theme is “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development.” It recognizes how technology is reshaping the world.
In a statement on Aug. 12, the ministry stated that under its theme of “Our Youth is our Wealth,” the government has developed 20 initiatives to empower young people.
These fall under the country’s Youth Development Strategy. Additionally, it includes a general administration for their development and employment.
The ministry recently conducted more than 15 workshops to promote awareness of the strategy and introduced a professional certificate program for young professionals.
Young people aged 15 to 39 constitute the largest percentage of the Kingdom’s population. Moreover, this makes them a fundamental base for economic and societal transformation, the ministry stated.
Moreover, the concept of International Youth Day was initially suggested at the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1998.
In conclusion, the UN General Assembly approved this proposal, officially designating August 12 as International Youth Day on December 17, 1999. The first International Youth Day was celebrated in 2000.
