Saudi Arabia Aims to Be Global Hub for Green Mineral Processing

Engineer Khaled Al Mudaifer, Deputy Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources for Mining Affairs, outlined Saudi Arabia’s strategic move toward providing necessary minerals for national industrial transformation and supporting the global shift to a greener future. Saudi Arabia aims to establish itself as a regional and global center for processing green and future minerals, leveraging its strategic location, advanced infrastructure, and high domestic demand.
Addressing Challenges in Clean Energy Transformation
In his speech at the “Middle East and North Africa Climate Week” conference, Al Mudaifer emphasized that the sharp increase in demand for minerals, crucial for the shift towards clean energy, encounters several significant challenges. These include discovering and developing new resources, and accelerating the permitting process for new mines. They also help in minimizing the impact of mining and processing on communities and the environment.
Demand for Essential Minerals
Al Mudaifer pointed out that the global energy transition is not just a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources but also a change in demand for essential minerals. Key minerals such as copper, rare earth metals, nickel, lithium, graphite, and silicon are essential for manufacturing clean energy technologies. The International Energy Agency estimates that over 3 billion tons of metals and minerals will be needed by 2050 to keep pace with the shift towards clean energy.
Saudi Arabia’s Commitment to Green Energy
The Deputy Minister stressed Saudi Arabia’s commitment to transitioning to green energy by developing a mining and minerals industry strategy. This strategy focuses on addressing vital challenges faced by the sector, such as stimulating exploration financing in the early stages It also focuses on ensuring the availability and reliability of geological data. The strategy aims enhancing innovation and technology to boost sustainability and productivity in the mining sector.
Comprehensive Framework for Sustainable Mining
Engineer Khaled Al Mudaifer highlighted that Saudi Arabia has established a comprehensive framework for the mineral sector. This framework aims to ensure compliance with environmental standards, manage resources, and direct investments towards sustainable and responsible mineral practices. The framework includes exploratory programs to identify and evaluate potentially critical and rare mineral deposits. It also includes the development of sustainable mineral extraction technologies. It is a commitment to environmental standards and resource management by companies operating in the mining sector. This framework demonstrates Saudi Arabia’s commitment to reducing environmental impact and achieving sustainable leadership in mining practices.
