Riyadh to Host Fifth Arab-Chinese Library, Information Experts Meeting

Riyadh will host the fifth edition of the Arab -Chinese  meeting in the field of libraries and information next Monday.

This event is part of the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum and is titled “The Transformation of Library Services in the Context of Changing Information Environment.

The Arab-Chinese meeting is organized by the Information, Documentation, and Translation Administration of the Arab League’s General Secretariat, in collaboration with the King Abdulaziz Public Library and the National Library of China.

The sessions will take place at the King Abdulaziz Public Library from December 4 to 7.

Objectives, Goals of Arab-Chinese Meeting

The primary objective of this Arab-Chinese Meeting edition is to activate methods and mechanisms for Arab-Chinese cooperation in the field of libraries and information within the scope of the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum.

It focuses on enhancing the role of Arab and Chinese libraries in enriching the content of the Arab-Chinese Digital Library.

Additionally, it aims to display joint projects in the areas of libraries, information, and document preservation undertaken by Arab and Chinese libraries, highlighting the achievements within the Arab-Chinese Digital Library framework.

Moreover, the event serves as a platform to introduce cultural projects in Saudi Arabia.

Participants in  Arab-Chinese Meeting

Firstly, participants encompass the General Secretariat of the Arab League, which oversees the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum.

Additionally, the King Abdulaziz Public Library is responsible for the Arab-Chinese Digital Library’s development. Furthermore, other participants include the National Library in Beijing.

Moreover, the list also includes library directors from China and the King Fahd National Library. Finally, deans from university libraries and private sector representatives are part of this diverse group.

Arab-Chinese Meeting Significance

The Kingdom, represented by the King Abdulaziz Public Library, hosts Arab-Chinese Meeting following the wish of the General Secretariat of the Arab League.

The President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, officially announced the start of the Arab-Chinese Digital Library project in July 2018.

In the presence of Arab foreign ministers and the Secretary-General of the Arab League, during the eighth session of the Arab-Chinese Cooperation Forum in Beijing.

History of Sessions

It is noteworthy that this session is organized biennially, alternating between China and the Arab countries. the first one was  in Cairo at the General Secretariat of the Arab League in 2015. The second at the National Library of China in Beijing in 2017. The third at the Kuwait National Library in Kuwait in 2019, and the fourth at the Zhejiang Library (China) (virtually) in 2021.
