KSA, US to Enhance Cooperation in Space Exploration

The United States and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia plan to enhance bilateral cooperation in space exploration and peaceful uses. This initiative, as stated by the U.S. State Department, focuses on technical discussions in aviation, earth science, space operations, and the exploration of outer space.

Both nations have expressed a mutual desire to strengthen collaboration. This includes commercial development, responsible space conduct, and space security.

Space Cooperation Agreements for Peaceful Uses

Saudi Arabia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UK Space Agency earlier this year for peaceful space usage. The agreement with the UK encompasses deep-space technology, scientific missions, human spaceflight programs, satellite launches, manufacturing satellites, and Earth observation services.

Expanding International Partnerships

In July, Saudi Arabia’s Space Authority held bilateral meetings with Chinese governmental bodies and companies. They discussed enhancing cooperation and building strategic partnerships in space technology and industry sectors.

Last year, the Authority signed a peaceful space use agreement with the Italian Space Agency. This aims to facilitate cooperation in space activities, display areas of common interest, and exchange of information, technology, and personnel.

Saudi Astronauts’ Mission to the ISS

In May, Saudi astronauts Rayyanah Barnawi and Ali AlQarni traveled to the International Space Station. They conducted space experiments before returning to Earth, landing off the coast of Florida.

The Saudi Communications, Space, and Technology Authority reported the space market in the Kingdom reached $400 million last year. The global investment in the space sector was $100 billion in 2022.

The Saudi Space Authority launched the Kingdom’s Astronaut Program last year. It aims to train Saudi personnel for long and short space missions, scientific experiments, and future space tasks. The Space Accelerator Program was also initiated to empower local entrepreneurs in the space sector, aligning with Saudi Arabia’s 2030 goals.
