Riyadh Leads Saudi Residential Energy Consumption, with 28.1% in 2023

The Riyadh region topped Saudi Arabia’s residential electrical energy consumption with a significant 28.1% in 2023. Meanwhile, the Eastern Province consumed 16.7% of residential electricity, while Al-Baha recorded the lowest at 0.9%. These findings came from the latest Household Energy Statistics Bulletin released by the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT).

Weekly Energy Usage of Household Appliances

The bulletin revealed interesting trends in the weekly usage of household electrical appliances. Water heating appliances operated an average of 62.1 hours weekly. Air conditioning units ran for 51.5 hours per week, while heating appliances used 17.9 hours per week on average. Cooking appliances were in use for an average of 6.8 hours each week.

The GASTAT report highlighted a growing interest in energy rationalization. An impressive 92.1% of families showed strong interest in reducing energy consumption during 2023. Additionally, 83.6% of families followed energy-saving guidelines when using home electrical appliances. Meanwhile, 55.2% of families were willing to invest in energy-efficient appliances.

Growing Interest in Solar Energy and Renewable Sources

A significant number of families, 42.3%, expressed interest in using solar energy at home across the Kingdom. This growing interest reflects Saudi households’ increasing demand for sustainable and renewable energy sources.

The bulletin also reported on energy use for cooking in residential homes. During 2023, 98.4% of homes in Saudi Arabia used some form of energy for cooking. Of these, 89% used cooking gas, while 9.3% relied on electricity. Other energy sources for cooking made up only 0.1% of homes.

Data Sources and Insights Consumption

The Household Energy Statistics Bulletin combines data from the Household Energy Survey and administrative records from the Ministry of Energy. The results also provide insights into how different housing types and ownership affect energy use in Saudi homes.
