Palestinian President Lauds Saudi Role in France’s Recognition of Statehood

The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, extended his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its efforts that culminated in a French commitment to formally recognize the State of Palestine, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

On Thursday, France’s President, Emmanuel Macron, announced that Paris would recognize an independent Palestinian State at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September, to be the first major Western power to take such a move.

“Consistent with its historic commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, I have decided that France will recognize the state of Palestine,” Macron posted on X.

In the light of this, Abbas expressed his appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Salman, for leading Saudi Arabia’s efforts and honorable positions in support of Palestine.

Furthermore, Abbas welcomed Macron’s announcement as a bold step toward establishing peace through the two-state solution, in accordance with international legitimacy and international law.

Abbas said the French move represented a victory for the Palestinian cause and underscored France’s commitment to supporting the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights to their homeland.

Moreover, he urged countries across the world to follow suit and recognize the State of Palestine based on the internationally-recognized two-state solution, in line with international resolutions.

Saudi Arabia and France will co-chair the International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution on July 28-29, 2025, at the UN headquarters in New York.

It is part of a broader push toward a two-state solution that involves recognizing a Palestinian State while guaranteeing Israel’s security, in a bid to resolve the decades-old conflict.
