Mawhiba Empowers Saudi Youth at International Biology Olympiad in Lithuania
The big picture: The Saudi Biology Team is participating in the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026 in Vilnius, Lithuania that runs from 12 to 19 July. Furthermore, the annual competition features more than 300 exceptionally talented students who represent 78 countries worldwide.
Why it matters: The King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) oversees the team. Mawhiba collaborates strategically with the Saudi Ministry of Education to empower young minds. Consequently, this participation showcases the Kingdom’s massive national investment in youth capabilities and scientific innovation, directly supporting the transformative goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
Historically, Saudi Arabia has secured over 500 international awards through Mawhiba’s programs, reflecting a deep institutional commitment to academic excellence. Furthermore, the Human Capability Development Program actively funds these talent discovery initiatives across all administrative regions.
Nurturing Elite Talent
Four elite high school students represent Saudi Arabia in this global scientific arena. Initially, these students began their journey through the National Olympiad for Science and Mathematics, called “NASMO.” This vital platform serves as the definitive primary gateway for discovering highly gifted individuals across all the Kingdom’s schools that now identify thousands of brilliant minds annually.
Subsequently, Mawhiba qualified these candidates through an intensive, rigorous training program, including theoretical workshops and practical laboratory camps both inside and outside the Kingdom. Elite national and international experts supervised the training to ensure the candidates achieved peak readiness. They spent thousands of hours perfecting laboratory techniques, reviewing advanced genetics, and analyzing ecosystem dynamics. Therefore, the final selection represents the brightest minds in life sciences. This system ensures that the national team always draws from the highest tier of student achievers.
Earlier this year, Mawhiba sent 192 qualified gifted students for 2026 international and regional science Olympiads. The Saudi national biology team achieved a remarkable accomplishment by winning six international medals at the Open Biology Olympiad in Sochi, Russia
The annual IBO serves as the premier global competition for high school students. Typically, the competition splits its testing into two main blocks consisting of rigorous theoretical papers and intensive practical experiments. It measures advanced scientific knowledge, evaluates critical problem-solving skills, and tests practical laboratory execution. Students must perform complex tasks in biochemistry, plant anatomy, and animal physiology under strict time constraints.
Driving Global Solutions
Ultimately, this international Olympiad inspires young talents to explore life sciences deeply, as the event fosters robust scientific cooperation and enables rich knowledge exchange between participating nations. Moreover, it highlights the critical role of biology in addressing urgent global challenges.
Specifically, these critical challenges include global healthcare improvements, sustainable agricultural practices, environmental protection, and climate change adaptation. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia’s active participation underscores its growing leadership role in regional scientific development. Through these initiatives, Saudi Arabia strengthens its competitive presence in international scientific forums.
The Kingdom continues to build strong research capabilities, ensuring a brighter future driven by innovation and knowledge. Consequently, this unwavering dedication inspires future generations of Saudi scientists to achieve unparalleled global excellence.
