Jeep Recall: Saudi Arabia Flags Critical Airbag Safety Risk

Saudi Arabia has recalled 2,987 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L vehicles from the 2023–2024 model years after identifying a programming defect that could affect passenger safety.

A Critical Safety Flaw

The Ministry of Commerce announced the recall on Thursday, October 8, citing a fault in the vehicles’ Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) module.

The defect could delay side-airbag deployment in the event of a collision, potentially increasing the risk of injury to vehicle occupants.

To determine whether their vehicles fall under the recall, owners have been advised to verify their VINs through the Ministry of Commerce’s website, according to Khaleej Times.

Affected customers can then contact the company to have the necessary updates installed free of charge.

Jeep Faces Another Safety Alert

The latest recall follows another safety alert involving the Jeep Grand Cherokee in September, when Saudi authorities recalled more than 300 vehicles from the 2024–2026 model years over a tire-related defect.

The issue involved the tire pressure monitoring system, which may fail to display warnings when tire pressure drops too low, potentially increasing the risk of an accident.

Similar concerns have prompted recalls involving other manufacturers. In September, Saudi authorities recalled 182 Tesla Model 3 vehicles from the 2024–2026 model years after discovering a defect affecting the vehicles’ airbag systems.

The Tesla recall comes as a result of a calibration defect affecting the activation of the Far Side Airbag (FSAB), which could prevent the airbag from functioning as intended during a side collision and increase the risk of injury.

Affected drivers were advised to install the required software update remotely, allowing them to address the issue without visiting a service center.

A Wider Gulf Safety Push

The recalls extended beyond Jeep and Tesla to other major automakers. On September 7, Saudi authorities announced the recall of 4,464 Genesis vehicles featuring eight models from the 2021–2026 model years, including the GV70, GV80, G80 and G90.

The defect could cause a fuel leak, potentially increasing the risk of fire.

Earlier, in August, the Kingdom recalled 84,639 Toyota Camry vehicles from the 2025–2026 model years over a fault in the instrument panel system.

The defect could prevent essential information from displaying correctly and interfere with several warning functions.

The fault could also disrupt turn signals, warning lights, ignition key alerts and seat belt warning sounds, potentially raising the risk of accidents.

Across the Gulf, recent vehicle recalls reflect ongoing efforts by authorities to identify safety defects and ensure that vehicles meet the region’s applicable safety requirements.
