Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani stated that Israel did not abide by January’s ceasefire agreement in Gaza, according to Arab News.
The statement was made today April 17 during the Emir’s meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
“As you know, we reached an agreement months ago, but unfortunately Israel did not abide by this agreement,” said the Qatari Ruler.
Through the mediation of Qatar, Egypt and the United States, a ceasefire truce came into effect on January 19 after more than 15 months of fighting.
Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed at least 50,983 Palestinians and wounded more than 115,338, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
After the initial phase of the truce ended in early March, both Israel and Hamas were unable to agree on the coming steps.
Then, Israel resumed fighting and airstrikes across the Gaza Strip on March 18 with and stopped the entry of humanitarian aids.
On Wednesday, Israel stated that it had transformed 30% of Gaza into a buffer zone in the widening offensive.
During the meeting, Sheikh Tamim said Qatar would “strive to bridge perspectives in order to reach an agreement that ends the suffering of the Palestinian people, especially in Gaza.”
Meanwhile, Putin praised Qatar’s “serious efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict” and described deaths in Gaza War as “a tragedy.”
Putin also noted that in order to achieve a long-term settlement, the agreement should depend on the basis of the UN resolution and the two-state solution.
