Canadian Embassy Strengthens Saudi Cultural Dialogue Through Cinema and Arts

The Canadian Embassy in Riyadh recently hosted a special screening of the award-winning film Une Colonie (A Colony) to strengthen Saudi-Canadian cultural dialogue through the arts. This event occurred during the closing week of the Diriyah Biennale for Contemporary Art, as part of a strategic partnership between the Saudi cultural platform “AIMS” and the Alliance Française in Saudi Arabia.
The screening successfully brought together an international audience to explore diverse artistic perspectives. Consequently, the event highlighted the growing role of creative industries in fostering global understanding.

A Narrative of Identity and Inclusion
Written and directed by Geneviève Dulude-De Celles, Une Colonie tells the poignant story of a young girl searching for identity and belonging. Her journey unfolds through a meaningful friendship with an Indigenous boy. The film offers a nuanced perspective on integration, openness, and intercultural understanding, directly reflecting the vibrant diversity of Canadian society.
Furthermore, the film earned prestigious accolades, including the Grand Prize and the People’s Choice Award at the Quebec City Film Festival. This screening underscores Canada’s commitment to creative industries as catalysts for communication. Canada actively promotes diverse voices and supports emerging talents while nurturing cultural exchanges with partners across the Kingdom and the wider region.

Aligning with Saudi Vision 2030
Jean-Philippe Linteau, the Canadian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, emphasized the importance of this cinematic initiative. He stated, “Canadian storytelling reflects the diversity of our society and the importance we place on dialogue and inclusion. We are delighted to share these insights with the Kingdom’s audience through our participation in the Diriyah Biennale public program. This spirit supports cultural exchange and the growing role of creative industries under Saudi Vision 2030.”
Katie Spurrell, Senior Advisor at the “AIMS” Foundation, also praised the collaboration, noting that the event helps build a genuine cultural community in Riyadh by uniting local and international residents. “Our cooperation with the Canadian Embassy has evolved over the years,” Sporell added. “We are pleased to provide a platform to showcase their remarkable films to the Saudi public.”
The screening also coincided with World Francophonie Day, a celebration that unites more than 300 million French speakers worldwide. This year’s theme, “Activate Your Francophonie,” emphasized the importance of engaging with the French language as a living, dynamic force in cultural exchange.
