Indonesia has welcomed the UN Security Council’s adoption of a draft resolution proposed by Washington supporting US President Donald Trump’s Gaza peace plan to end the war in Gaza and establish an international stabilization force, according to Reuters.
“The resolution prioritizes conflict resolution and prolonged peace through the capacity building of the Palestinian authorities,” foreign ministry spokesperson foreign ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said in a statement.
Yvonne affirmed that his country will always back the Palestinian rights of establishing an independent and sovereign state.
Peacekeeping Operation
As part of international efforts to ensure peace and stability in Gaza, Washington has been attempting to persuade countries such as Indonesia and Egypt to take part in the peacekeeping operation and send troops to the Palestinian enclave. The troops will be responsible of demilitarizing Gaza by decommissioning weapons and destroying military infrastructure.
Last week, Indonesia announced that it has trained up to 20,000 troops to undertake health and construction tasks.
“We’ve prepared a maximum of 20,000 troops, but the specifications will revolve around health and construction,” Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said.
In September, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto told the United Nations General Assembly that his country was ready to deploy 20,000 or more troops in Gaza to help secure peace if there was a resolution from the UN.
Indonesia & Israel Relations
Having no diplomatic relations with Israel, Indonesia has long been an advocative for a two-state solution in Palestine.
During the two-year war that started in October 2023, Indonesia has condemned Israel’s violence in Gaza and has been sending humanitarian aid to help Palestinians.
Indonesia has slightly softened its stance towards Israel in recent months under the government of President Prabowo Subianto.
Prabowo said that the international community should recognize an independent Palestine, but also guarantee the safety and security of Israel, during the UN General Assembly in September.
