Trump Picks Own Miami Resort for 2026 G20 Summit

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will host the 2026 G20 summit at his Trump National Doral resort in Miami, despite his previous abandonment of a similar plan during his first term amid corruption allegations.

Trump described the Doral resort as the perfect venue for the summit, scheduled for December 2026, emphasizing its beauty and convenient location near the airport. “Everybody wants it there because it’s right next to the airport. It’s beautiful,” he stated in the Oval Office.

Despite concerns about potential conflicts of interest, Trump assured reporters that he would not profit from the summit. “We will not make any money on it. I just want it to go well,” he said. He also noted that hotel rooms in Miami are typically fully booked in December, making Doral an ideal choice.

A History of Controversy

Trump previously attempted to host the 2020 G7 summit at Doral, which sparked outrage among Democrats who labeled it a blatant act of corruption. He later abandoned that plan, citing “media and Democrat crazed and irrational hostility.” The summit ultimately did not occur due to the Covid pandemic.

This time, Trump expressed openness to inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping to the G20. “I would love them to come as observers,” he said, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Trump confirmed he will not attend this year’s G20 summit in South Africa, opting to send Vice President JD Vance instead. He previously cited unfounded claims of systemic persecution of white citizens in South Africa as a reason for his absence. “I won’t be going; JD will be going,” Trump stated.
